Effects work: For this effect to work, we knew we were going to be competing with an entire internet filled with After Effects "hit by car" videos. In such videos, one simply warps your subject as the car (filmed right after the action) flies through the frame. You move your subject with the car and add motion blur. In our case, we wanted to do something different, something more impactful. In the 2007 movie "Hot Rod" starring Andy Samburg, there is an effect where what appears to be Andy on a motorcycle attempts to jump a ramp and flies off, smacking brutally into the landing ramp. This effect was only shown in a wide, and the editing is seamless, making for a hilarious, somewhat real yet fake comedic moment. We wanted to do this. To accomplish it, we knew we needed a stunt dummy. So we spent 40 dollars for a halloween dummy, bought the same outfit, and through a halloween old man mask with a wig on it. At the right moment the car flew through and would "supposedly" hit our talent, we tossed the dummy onto the car and the rest was just the dummy flying through the frame. Before that moment, we had the actor act out kicking the bucket and pretending to get hit. For three frames we warped his body to match with the exact frame the stunt dummy was at. With a plate shot and lots of time in post cutting out the elements to time them perfectly (plus with a bit of painting on our talent's face onto the dummy) we achieved the gold you see above.
